Minimum Qualifications:

1. High School Diploma or equivalent
2. One year of Augo and/or Diesel Schooling or two years of work experience as a Mechanic
3. Hold a valid CDL with School Bus and passenger endorsements, or be able to obtain one within 6 months of hire date.
4. Valid Driver’s license
5. Have or can obtain background clearance with WSP and FB
6. Demonstrated use of technology including computers and software applications.
7. Meet all Federal and State drug and alcohol CDL holder regulations
8. Able to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License with class endorsement, air brake restriction removed, passenger endorsement, plus School Bus endorsement.
9. Possess or obtain Air Brake and Air Brake inspector certification card, (49CFR396.25).
10. ASE Master Certification/or journeyman status preferred.
11. Able to obtain forklift certification.Able to obtain First Aid & CPR/AED certifications

 

Knowledge and Abilities: 

 

• Ability to lift up to 50 lb. on a regular basis, and lift up to 75 lbs. occasionally.
• Ability to work in awkward positions and in areas with limited access.
• Ability to work in inclement weather.
• Must be available to work all shifts.
• Must be able to work with constant interruptions.
• Must be able to safely operate medium-duty commercial vehicles.
• Must have a high degree of common sense and be able to work independently.
• Ability to read effectively, write legibly and communicate effectively.
• Basic computer skills required.
• Knowledge of school bus-specific criteria and vehicle inspection criteria.
• Knowledge of standard practices related to maintenance and repairs of fleet and facility.
• Knowledge of safety procedures, including OSHA and L&I regulations.
• In-depth knowledge of vehicle systems.
• In-depth knowledge of vehicle repair procedures.
• Knowledge of precision measuring tools.Must be able to work on site.

 

Essential Job Functions:    

 

Maintains records of repairs, cost, warranties, etc. for the purpose of documenting required information to meet district, state, and federal requirements:

 

• Order parts, if needed, when lead is out.

 

Assesses incidents, complaints, accidents and / or potential emergency situations for the purpose of resolving or recommending a resolution to the situation:

• Accident investigation.
• Hazardous spill containment and cleanup.
• Injuries.
• Work environment evaluation.
• Be able to assist in emergencies.
• Attend safety and in-service meetings as needed.
• Read, update, and understand MSDS sheets.
• Document repairs and findings and compile and maintain service records.

 

Fabricates parts for the purpose of providing items necessary for repairs:

• Operates hand tools and shop equipment.
• Measures & Performs mathematical functions.
• Uses welders and shop equipment to fabricate items.

 

Performs minor body and upholstery work:

• Repairs seat upholstery.
• Welds seat frames.
• Operates rivet gun and grinder.

 

Steam cleans vehicles, ensures vehicles are kept to cleanliness standards:

• Operates steam cleaner.
• Inspects bus interiors, reports deficiencies to supervisor.

 

Repairs vehicle system and components and replaces defective parts for the purpose of ensuring the availability of vehicles in a safe operating condition:

• Overhauls air and hydraulic brake systems.
• Performs gas and diesel tune-ups.
• Change tires; balance tires.
• Replace brake components, steering components, and suspension components.
• Replaces engines and related components.
• Replaces transmissions and related components.
• Replaces clutches and drive-line components.

 

Inspects vehicles and implements preventative maintenance to ensure that the vehicle is in a safe operating condition:

• Perform school bus and safety inspections, and repairs to meet State and District standards.
• Work with the Washington State Patrol during inspections.
• Inspect and service equipment to Labor and Industry, and District standards.
• Perform winter operating requirements: chaining buses, snow blowing and shoveling, plowing, deicing, weather-related vehicle recovery, etc.
• Change oil and filters, fuel filters, air & P.S. filters, lubricate chassis and replace belts.
• Inspects all vehicle systems.

 

Diagnoses potential vehicle malfunctions for the purpose of determining needed vehicle repairs or replacement:

• Operates diagnostic equipment and operates test equipment.
• Uses troubleshooting skills.
• Continue educational training when approved, including out-of-town trips.
• Must be available to go out on the road, in the District and out of the District, to repair vehicles
• Available to assist after hours to recover disabled vehicles.

 

Maintains safe work practices, tools, equipment, and work area for the purpose of improving productivity and reducing hazards to staff:

• Performs work in a safe and efficient manner using safe work practices that include wearing protective equipment and using tools properly.
• Keeps work area clean and organized – including the shop and grounds.
• Works with hazardous materials.
• Reports deficiencies to the supervisor.      

 

Assists other personnel as needed for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities:

• Assists other staff members and be a team player.
• Must be willing to drive a school bus with students on board at times.

 

Communicates and interacts with other staff:

Positive interaction with all staff.

Communicates effectively with director of transportation, lead, office staff, drivers, and other mechanics.

Coordinates with dispatch on availability of transportation vehicles.
