Position: VAN/CAR DRIVER 

JOB SUMMARY: 

This position safely operates district vans and/or passenger vehicles under all types of weather conditions, including but not limited to fog, rain, sleet, snow, and ice. Responsibilities include transporting students and other authorized persons on regular “to and from school” routes, and on field trips, co-curricular, and special or extra activity trips as authorized by district officials. Drivers ensure the safe, reliable, and professional transport of all passengers in compliance with district policies and state regulations. 

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS: 

Reports to Building Administrator

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Must have a current, valid WA State Commercial Driver's License
2. Must not have been convicted of any law violations involving physical molestation, abuse, injury, or neglect of a minor. 
3. Must be age 21 or older.
4. Must have a clean driving record.
5. Must have or obtain CPR/First Aid certification

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

1. Drives district vans/cars on scheduled routes and district-approved trips within and outside school district boundaries. 
2. Conducts pre-trip and post-trip inspections, including routine cleaning of the vehicle interior/exterior. 
3. Operates and services all van/car equipment and accessories (e.g., first aid kits, fire extinguishers, warning triangles). 
4. Maintains safety and orderly conduct of student passengers; follows district protocols for addressing and reporting unsafe behavior or conditions. 
5. Completes all required driver training and ongoing professional development as required by the State Superintendent of Public Instruction and Peninsula School District’s Transportation Department. 
6. Accurately completes required forms, records, timesheets, trip reports, incident reports, and other documentation per district and state requirements. 
7. Operates district vehicles in accordance with Washington State traffic laws and district policies. 
8. Performs required operational and safety inspections of the vehicle and related equipment.
9. Communicates effectively with students, parents, staff, and the general public in a courteous and professional manner. 
10. Provides basic first aid or CPR assistance as appropriate and within training limits.
11. Assists ill or physically impaired students entering or exiting the vehicle as needed. 
12. Performs other related transportation duties as assigned. 

Education and Experience: 

1. High school graduation or equivalent. 
2. Minimum five (5) years of driving experience with a clear driving record.
3. Demonstrated ability in reading, writing, and clear communication. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

1. Demonstrated safe driving habits and ability to operate district vehicles in various weather and traffic conditions. 
2. Knowledge of or ability to learn district routes and geographic service areas.
3. Understanding of the district’s Transportation Department policies and procedures.
4. Ability to maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, staff, and the community. 
5. Sufficient strength and physical ability to assist students as needed in entering or exiting the vehicle. 
6. Excellent hearing and vision capabilities. 

Licenses/Special Requirements: 

1. Current Washington State Department of Licensing driving abstract with a clean record. 
2. Non-DOT pre-employment and random drug testing 
3. Completion of required district driver training, including first aid and CPR certification.
4. Valid Washington State Driver’s License. 
5. Must be at least 21 years of age. 
6. Driving Abstract from the Department of Licensing 
7. DOT physical examination certifying medical ability to operate a district vehicle safely.
